Back to School 2019-2020 Information

July, 2019

Dear Cougar Families,

I am pleased to welcome the incoming class of 2023 to Rancho Cotate High School, new students, as well as the returning classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022.   Rancho Cotate is an excellent school offering a diverse selection of high-quality programs, which include over a dozen Advanced Placement courses, as well as 10 career technical education pathways.

School begins on August 13th.  The bell schedule is listed below. Since school is beginning on a Tuesday, it will be a late start day.   Student schedules will not be finalized until 4 p.m. August 12th, as the counselors will be updating classes.   Schedules for all 9th graders will be available in the new TAG gym before school. All other students will be able to access their schedule through PowerSchool.  If an upperclassman needs a hard copy of their schedule they can also request one at the TAG gym in the morning.

Parents and/or guardians will be receiving an email with instructions on how to complete the online Parent Annual Notification packet.

This year, we will be starting our 9th grade academies.  The academy offerings are: Film and Broadcasting, Law and Justice, Biomedical, Careers in Sport, and Computer Science.  Students in these academies will share the same English, History, and Focus Area teachers.  Each academy will offer an academic pathway for students to follow in grades 10th-12th.

The academy model provides students with an opportunity to customize school to their career interests.  In this way, students can explore an area of interest with students who are interested in the same things as they are.  Academies have the additional advantage of providing a small learning community – a home base of teachers and students who can help situate incoming 9th graders and make them feel more comfortable.

The formal introduction, or orientation to the school will be done through the academies during the first few days of school.  Students will be introduced to the resources of the school, our school-wide expectations, procedures to follow during an emergency, and the academic and social opportunities Rancho Cotate offers.

We will be hosting a parent orientation in the TAG theater on August 7th at 6:30 p.m.   All parents are welcome to join us.  We will be covering the following topics: Resources available for parents and students, how to help your student be successful, an overview of programs available at Rancho Cotate.  We hope to see you there.

Additionally, we are providing optional tours of the school to any new students on the following dates:

August 8th – 8:00 – 9:30 a.m.
August 9th – 8:00 – 9:30 a.m.

These tours are designed to orient new students to the physical layout of the campus.  Tours will be conducted by our student leaders in Link Crew.

Counselor drop-ins will be August 6th, 7th and 8th from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m

School and ID card pictures will be taken on Monday, August 19th.
