Advancement via Inpidualized Determination
AVID courses are designed to:
- Develop students as reader and writers
- Teach specific strategies for critical thinking skills
- Provides support to students to help them achieve their academic goals
AVID's curriculum is based on:

- Cornell Note-Taking
- Socratic Seminars
RCHS offers a total of 5 AVID Courses
AVID 1 (9thGrade Students): Students are introduced to Cornell note-taking, binder organization, time management, and test taking skills. AVID Students learn academic skills and receive tutorial support to enhance success in college preparatory course work.
*Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and are encouraged to take Honor and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
AVID 2 (10thGrade Students): In this course students have the opportunity to build on what they learned from AVID 1. There is an emphasis on Cornell note-taking, strategies for effective writing, reading, presentations skills (speaking and listening), test taking strategies, binder organization, and character development. In addition this course includes activities designed to motivate students to pursue a college education after completing high school.
*AVID 2 students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above and be enrolled in CSU/UC required classes with a ";C" or higher in regular or accelerated courses (AP or Honors).
AVID 3 (11thGrade Students): In this course, students will learn strategies and receive tutoring support to enhance success in college preparatory course work. Student work inpidually, as well as in tutor-led collaborative groups to further enhance their skills in Cornell note-taking, strategies for effective writing, reading, presentations skills (speaking and listening), test taking strategies, binder organization, and character development.
*AVID 3 students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above and be enrolled in CSU/UC required classes with a ";C" or higher in regular or accelerated courses (AP or Honors).
AVID SeniorSeminar: In this course, students will engage in higher levels of writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. These high levels of thinking, reading, writing, and oral language skills are needed to preparestudents for the level of work required to produce a culminating project at the end of their senior year.
*Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
AVID TutorLeadership (11th and 12th Grade Students): This course provides students with an opportunity to tutor and mentor college-bound peers also enrolled in AVID courses. Students not only tutor other AVID students, but also assist the teacher in providing academic and organizational skills needed to be successful in college. Tutors receive instruction and training using the inquiry method that encourages higher level of thinking.
*Tutors must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above and been rolled in Honors and/or AP courses, AVID courses, or previously enrolled in AVID courses.
